Rolex Zephyr Ref. 1009

While this Rolex Zephyr Ref. 1009 would likely have been sold with an 18 karat yellow gold bracelet in the late 1950s, by the time we sourced this watch it had lost its original bracelet. The project began, after sourcing the piece, with a search for a period correct, 19mm oyster link bracelet to fit to the watch.

Simultaneously, we completed a full mechanical overhaul of the watch, and designed and executed a new color scheme featuring a deep blue palette and sunray finish. The lettering on the dial was rendered in a champagne color taken from the original color of the dial, and the lower text was deleted and replaced with the new owner’s initials.

Once a period correct bracelet was located, a light polish was performed to match the hue of the case to the hue of the bracelet. The dial was reinstalled and the watch was adjusted for more precise timekeeping.

The final stage of this project was the fabrication of a custom suede strap color-matched to the new dial. Interchangeable spring-bars were added for easy installation. The suede auxiliary strap also featured a custom-made 18 karat gold buckle designed to evoke the Rolex logo but with a unique, art deco ethos.
