Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601
The “Fire Engine” Datejust represents one of our simplest and most elegant bespoke projects. This watch began life as an unworn, new old stock Rolex Datejust Ref. 1601 in stainless steel. A mechanical overhaul was completed, and the dial and calendar discs were sent to our painter in California.
The scheme was simple. The palette was inspired by the New York Fire Department. The dial was refinished in a glossy “fire engine” red taken from the FDNY, and the calendar disc was refinished in a roulette scheme with the red text matched to the dial. Accents on the dial were rendered in white, and the lower text was deleted and replaced with letters significant to the piece’s new owner.
The finishing touch on the “Fire Engine” Datejust was the addition of a custom fabricated exhibition caseback with sapphire crystal. The original, 18 karat white gold fluted bezel was retained, as was the original stainless steel jubilee bracelet.
